Arguably Wagga’s most famous export since the Chiko Roll. Vanilla Milk Stout has won 2 Gold Medals and Best Speciality Beer at the Australian International Beer Awards as well being voted into the top 10 of the Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers.
This is classed as a milk stout because we add lactose (milk sugar) to the beer during the boiling phase – this allows for a generous sweetness to remain after fermentation. The sweetness complements the chocolate and coffee notes from the darker English malts used. A touch of Heilala Vanilla adds a subtle complexity and further accentuates the sweetness.
So how did it all begin? In March 2011, Wagga got hammered by crickets. The brewpub was covered in millions of hopping black insects. We needed a brew so dark, so original, so delicious, that if a little bugger hopped into a customer’s glass they wouldn’t even notice and/or care. So was born Vanilla Milk Stout.
